It’s natural to want to play at the highest level possible and to do whatever it takes to make that happen. One common phrase that I hear from players is “I will play anywhere.” While it may seem like a good attitude to have, this can actually be detrimental to your basketball career. In this blog post, I will explain why it is not a good idea for players to say “I will play anywhere” and why having a clear vision of where you would like to play is important.

Have You Really Investigated Playing Everywhere?

When players say “I will play anywhere,” they often haven’t thought through the implications of that statement. Have you really investigated playing in every country or league? Each league and country has its own style of play, culture, and language. It’s important to do your research and understand what you’re getting into before making such a statement. You may find that certain leagues or countries are not a good fit for you.

Having a Clear Vision Helps You Focus Your Efforts

One of the biggest reasons why having a clear vision of where you would like to play is important is that it helps you focus your efforts. If you’re not sure where you want to play, you may end up wasting time and money chasing opportunities that are not a good fit for you. By having a clear vision, you can focus your energy on pursuing opportunities that align with your goals and skills.

A Clear Vision Helps You Stand Out

When you have a clear vision of where you want to play, you can tailor your training and preparation to that specific league or country. This can help you stand out from other players who are simply saying “I will play anywhere.” By demonstrating that you have done your research and are serious about playing in a particular league or country, you can make a stronger impression on coaches and scouts.

While it’s important to be open to different opportunities and to have a flexible mindset, saying “I will play anywhere” can hurt your basketball career. Instead, take the time to research different leagues and countries and develop a clear vision of where you would like to play. By doing so, you can focus your efforts, stand out from other players, and increase your chances of success. Remember, having a clear vision doesn’t mean you’re limiting yourself, it means you’re being intentional about your goals and taking control of your basketball career.

  1. How does one research leagues or countries’ play style? Like if I’m more of player who looks for their shot within the offence instead of being an isolation player, how do I figure which country suits me?

  2. Good question OJ. Probably the easiest way would be to reach out to players in different countries and ask. I can tell you this though, you may struggle with your style in most countries unless you were to luck up and find the right coach to use you properly. There is no GLUE GUY for American players overseas unles you are playing on a high level. Rule of thumb, the lower the level, the more expected of American players…
