Overseas basketball isn’t just about what happens on the court—it’s also about making the right business moves off it. One of the toughest decisions a player can make is parting ways with their agent. Maybe they’re not delivering, maybe you’re looking for new opportunities, or maybe it’s just time for a change.
No matter the reason, how you handle this process matters. Let’s break it down so you don’t burn bridges or mess up your career.
Step 1: Know the FIBA Rules
Since January 2022, FIBA rules state that you can terminate your agent contract with a 30-day notice. Here’s what that means for you:
Give Written Notice – You must inform your agent at least 30 days in advance before officially parting ways. During this time, they are still your official representative.
Time It Right – If you’re in the middle of team issues (late payments, benching, or contract disputes), don’t be too quick to fire your agent—they might still need to help you during those 30 days.
Don’t Sign a New Contract Yet – If you sign with a new team during the notice period, your old agent is still entitled to a commission. That’s a headache you don’t need!
Step 2: Plan Your Next Move
Before making any drastic decisions:
Have Another Agent in Mind – Going agent-less in overseas basketball can be dangerous. You can technically sign with another agent during this period, but make sure you know what you’re getting into.
Keep It Professional – No emotional emails or messy breakups. Thank them, keep it short, and move on.
Use a Formal Termination Email – A simple, respectful message does the job. Here’s an example:
Sample Email to Terminate Your Agent
Subject: Termination of Agent/Player Contract
Dear [Agent’s Name],
I hope you’re doing well. First, I want to sincerely thank you for the work and support you’ve provided during our time together. After careful consideration, I’ve decided to take a different direction with my career.
This email serves as my 30-day notice to terminate our player-agent contract, effective as of [insert date], as per FIBA regulations.
Thank you again for your efforts. I appreciate everything you’ve done and wish you continued success.
Best regards,
[Your Name]
[Your Contact Information]
Step 3: Secure Your Paper Trail
To avoid issues down the road:
CC Another Agency Member & FIBA – Forward the email to another person in the agency and FIBA (info@fiba.basketball) to document the termination officially.
Avoid Text Message Terminations – Breaking up over text isn’t cool in relationships, and it’s not cool in business either. Always send an email or formal letter.
Before you make a move, ask yourself:
Do you have a better option lined up?
Is your situation stable? (Think about injuries, being cut, or needing team negotiations)
Do you actually NEED to fire them, or are you just frustrated with the process?
