As a professional basketball player, having an agent is essential in your career. The agent’s job is to market you to teams and negotiate the best deals for your career growth. Communication is critical between the player and agent, but how much communication is needed? Well, it depends on various factors.

Firstly, it’s important to note that the amount of communication needed with an agent varies depending on individual situations. Some agents will keep players informed when teams ask for information, while others will wait until a formal offer is made. The player should discuss this with their agent before actually hiring them. Set communication expectations and establish a communication style that works for both parties.

Another factor to consider is timing. The time to get nervous about not having a job depends on when the player signed with the agent and how long the agent has had to market the player. If the player signed with the agent late in the off-season, it might take longer for the agent to find a suitable team. In such cases, it’s important for the player to trust the agent’s process and be patient.

In addition to the above factors, the player’s performance in the previous season also plays a role in communication with the agent. If the player had a good season, the agent might not need to communicate as much. However, if the player had a poor season, the agent might need to communicate more to find new opportunities.

For higher-level players, it can be somewhat easier for an agent to find a job for the player. For lower-level players might have to be more patient because it can take more time. Patience is key when working with an agent.

When it comes to communication between the player and the agent, it’s important to note that if there is news to give, the agent would communicate that. If there is no news, it generally means there is no serious offer on the table. However, the player could still check-in with the agent and ask questions such as, “Hey, I am just checking in, I know you would have gotten to me if something was out there. What is the market looking like? What are your thoughts?”

It’s important for players to keep in contact with their agent without harassing them. The agent’s job is to find the player a job, and it’s in their best interest to do so, as they only get paid if the player signs a contract. However, it’s also important for players to understand that finding a job can take time, and the agent might not have news to share every week.
