Let’s start with a simple question: If you had to choose between earning $500 or $1000, which would you go for? Easy, right? Of course, you’d pick the $1000. Now, here’s the twist—you can only get the $1000 if you kiss your mom, and the $500 if you kiss a stranger. Still going for that $1000? Probably, because the choice is obvious!
This analogy isn’t just about an awkward hypothetical—it actually relates to something important in your basketball career: choosing the right agent.
If you’re aiming to play in Europe, why would you settle for an agent based in the U.S.? Think of it like the $500 or $1000 choice. While I’m not against American agents, there’s a simple math equation here that could make a big difference for your career.
The Middleman Dilemma
When you sign with an American agent to land a job in Europe, here’s what happens: your American agent typically has to rely on a partner agent in Europe to actually get you on a team’s radar. That’s pretty standard in the business, but it introduces potential problems:
The Competition You Don’t Know About
Imagine the European partner agent already has a player(s) similar to you at the same position. Now, that player is competing for the same job you want, but with a big advantage—you don’t even know they exist. The team is interested in you both, but guess who the partner agent will push for?
- You, who they’ll only make 5% on because they have to split the 10% commission with your American agent?
- Or their own player, where they get the full 10%? Spoiler alert: it’s not you. The math isn’t in your favor.
What Happens When You Get Injured/Fired?
Say you do land a job, but then you get hurt or even fired. If your American agent doesn’t have a direct connection with the team, you’ll have to rely on that same partner agent to fight for your rights—someone who barely knows you. Worse, they might prioritize their relationship with the team over your needs, especially if they hope to keep doing business with that team in the future. Will they REALLY go all-in to get you a fair settlement and make sure you’re taken care of? Maybe. But do you really want to leave that up to chance?
What to Ask Your Agent
Not all agents work this way. Some American agents do fly to Europe regularly, establishing strong relationships with GMs and coaches. But it’s important for you to know the facts. Here’s a simple way to gauge your agent’s reach: ask them how often they’re in Europe (or wherever you would like to play). If the answer is “never,” you might be in for a tough time.
Another key question: how many partner agents does your American agent work with? If they’re selective and only work with a trusted few, that’s a good sign. But if they tell you they have partner agents all over Europe, you might just be that $500 kiss from my example—less priority, less pay, and more obstacles.
The Right Fit for the Right League
This isn’t a bash on American agents! If your dream is the NBA or the G-League, then absolutely, an American agent makes sense. But if your goal is Europe? You need someone based there, who knows the leagues, coaches, and GMs personally. The same goes if you’re looking to play in South America, Asia, or Australia—find an agent who specializes in that region.
It all comes down to one thing: cutting out the middleman. Why make your career harder by adding layers of communication and commission splits? The more direct your agent’s relationship with teams, the better your chances of securing a contract, getting paid on time, and receiving proper support when things don’t go as planned.
