Last week, I had a conversation with a player who had just received two overseas offers. Country A offered more money—straightforward cash. Country B offered slightly less, but came with a few perks and was in a country with a much lower cost of living. Like many players before him, he was stuck in a tough spot:
“Should I take the higher salary or the better situation?” That conversation is what sparked this blog.
As an overseas basketball mentor who’s lived this journey and helped guide many players through it, I can tell you this: money is important—but it’s far from everything. The real question you should be asking is: “What’s the value of this offer… and how does it affect my life, growth, and next steps?”
1. Cost of Living: What Will That Paycheck Actually Buy You?
Let’s say one team is offering you $3,500/month in Switzerland, and another is offering you $2,500/month in Portugal. At first glance, Switzerland seems like the easy choice. But here’s the truth most rookies do not consider: That $3,500 might feel like $2,000 once you start paying for everyday life.
Switzerland is continuously ranked as the most expensive European country to live in. Now compare that to Portugal which was ranked ast 21st out of 37 EU countries. In other words, the lower offer might leave you with more money in your pocket at the end of the month.
Pro Tip: Always ask what expenses are covered and what you’ll need to pay out of pocket. Then research the cost of living in that country or city. It makes a massive difference.
2. Playing Time and Role: Will You Even Get to Hoop?
Would you rather make $3,000/month and play 8 minutes a game… or $2,000/month and play 30 minutes, build your resume, and lead a team?
Unless you’re in year 10 and just trying to stack some checks, you should always bet on playing time, growth, and visibility—especially early in your career. Scouts, agents, and future teams aren’t looking at how much you made, they’re watching your effectiveness in the minutes your played, your numbers, and your impact on wins and losses.
Sometimes the lower-paying offer is a setup for a much bigger contract down the road.
3. Stability and Professionalism of the Club
This is a hard one to measure, but it matters more than players realize. A slightly higher paycheck means nothing if:
- They’re late paying.
- Practices are disorganized.
- Your coach doesn’t communicate.
- The club has a reputation for cutting players mid-season.
If a team is known for poor treatment of imports or shady contract handling, run.
Ask around. Talk to former players. Or better yet—get someone in your corner who’s done it before. (Hint: That’s what I do.)
4. Location and Mental Health: Can You Actually Live There?
You’re going to live in this place for 8–10 months. Can you picture yourself there?
- Can you access what you need: gym, groceries, community?
- Will you be isolated?
- Are you mentally prepared to be the only foreigner in a small village?
Even the nicest contract can feel like a prison if you hate your environment. On the flip side, there are low-paying countries where imports feel comfortable, safe, and supported—and that leads to better performance and longer careers.
5. Development Opportunities and Exposure
Is the league streamed online? Do scouts or agents regularly attend games? Is your team in a respected league that can launch you to a better opportunity? Does the team play internationally?
This is your stock. And if you want to rise, you need the right exposure—not just a number on a contract. I’ve seen guys take “glamorous” contracts in obscure leagues, disappear for a season, and struggle to bounce back so choose wisely.
Playing Devil’s Advocate: Yeah, But… I Need the Money
I hear you. For some players, especially those supporting family or trying to stack early career cash, money does matter more right now. That’s valid. Just make sure you’re not chasing a bag today that keeps you stuck tomorrow.
It’s not always an easy call—but it should always be an informed one.
