I hadn’t planned on writing today, but a conversation with a player who hasn’t yet experienced overseas basketball pushed me to address one of my biggest pet peeves.I absolutely detest it when players try to measure their abilities against overseas pros in summer leagues, pickup games, or any unofficial setting.
I know that sounds harsh, but hear me out.
Too often I hear, “I dominated so-and-so overseas pro this summer, so I know I can play overseas too.” That type of thinking is misleading at best and destructive at worst. Let’s break down why.
The Overseas Game: A Completely Different Beast
Basketball overseas isn’t just the same game in a different country. It’s a business, a livelihood, and a cultural adjustment all wrapped into one. What you see at the local summer run or pro-am is not the reality of life overseas.
1. Roles and Responsibilities
Overseas players are signed for specific roles. Maybe they’re the defensive stopper, the energy guy, or the system point guard. In a pickup game, you might see them experimenting or just getting some cardio in. That’s not the same player you’d face if their contract — and paycheck — depended on that night’s performance.
2. Game Style and Rules
The FIBA game is different. From officiating standards to tactical schemes, the overseas game forces you to adapt quickly. I’ve seen players who dominate runs back home crumble when faced with the physicality, 24-second shot clock, or the sheer tactical discipline demanded overseas.
3. Competition Level
Every overseas league — even the ones many Americans consider “lower tier” — is stocked with talent. Players from around the world compete for limited spots. Standing out takes more than a few good summer buckets; it takes consistency, discipline, and a professional mindset every single day.
The Danger of Misleading Comparisons
Using casual encounters as evidence that you “belong overseas” does more harm than good. It distracts from what really matters — preparing yourself for the unique challenges of international basketball.
- Different paths, different outcomes: Overseas players reach those opportunities through years of networking, adaptability, and resilience. Your story won’t look like theirs, and that’s okay.
- Roles matter: Overseas success is not about scoring 30 points. It’s about fulfilling the role a coach hired you to play, whether that’s being a passer, defender, shooter, or glue guy.
- Respect the game: Overseas basketball is its own culture. If you don’t respect it and prepare for it, you’ll find out quickly that “just hooping” isn’t enough.
Where Players Go Wrong
Here’s the reality: dominating a local run doesn’t get you signed. Agents, clubs, and coaches don’t care who you locked up in a summer league. They care if you understand how to present yourself, adapt to their system, and bring value to their organization.
This is where so many players fail — they think talent alone will get them across the water. But in today’s market, talent is only the starting point. You need a plan, a strategy, and the right guidance to navigate the overseas system.
That’s what I do at SJM Consulting. I help players cut through the noise, avoid the false comparisons, and build a real overseas plan of action. Because the overseas dream isn’t about proving yourself in a gym back home — it’s about proving yourself in the environments that actually matter.
If you’re ready to stop guessing and start planning your path overseas, let’s connect. I’ll give you the clarity you need to move from casual comparisons to a real career strategy.
