Playing overseas is an unforgettable experience, but when the season ends, it’s time to pack up and head home. While you might be focused on your next contract or enjoying a well-earned break, how you leave your team can impact your reputation and even future opportunities. So before you hop on that flight, here’s a checklist to make sure you exit on good terms and with everything in order.
1. Return the Car in Good Condition
If your team provided you with a car, treat it like a rental. Give it a good clean, fill up the tank (if required), and make sure it’s in the same shape as when you got it. The last thing you want is unnecessary drama over a dirty interior or an unreported scratch.
2. Leave Your Apartment Spotless
Even if you never plan on returning to that apartment, respect the space. Sweep, vacuum, wipe down surfaces, and take out the trash. Remember, the next player might be moving in right after you—would you want to walk into a mess? Plus, leaving it clean shows professionalism and respect.
3. Take Pictures of Everything
Before handing over the keys to your car and apartment, take photos—inside, outside, and any existing damage. If anything was already broken or worn down, document it. These pictures could protect you if the team tries to claim you caused damage when you didn’t.
4. Don’t Take Anything That’s Not Yours
That team hoodie or extra pair of game shorts might seem like a harmless souvenir, but unless you were explicitly told you can keep them, leave them behind. Some teams take inventory seriously, and the last thing you need is a delay in your Letter of Clearance over missing gear.
5. Settle Any Outstanding Bills
Most teams cover rent and utilities, but if you signed a personal contract—like a cell phone plan or internet—make sure your bills are squared away before you leave. You never know if you’ll return to that country, and unpaid debts can cause unnecessary headaches down the line.
6. Share Your Contact Information
Don’t just disappear. Give your number or email to teammates, coaches, and even management. I’ve seen cases where a team wanted to re-sign a player but couldn’t reach them. Stay connected—you never know when an opportunity might come knocking.
Why This Matters
The basketball world is small. Even if you’re sure you’ll never play for that team again, coaches, GMs, and agents talk. How you leave can affect future offers, references, and even your overall reputation. Handle your departure professionally, and it will only work in your favor.
